Cardea is a national nonprofit consulting organization that partners with public agencies, nonprofits, and community organizations to strengthen systems and improve outcomes across public health and human services.
Our Board provides governance, strategic guidance, and fiduciary oversight in support of Cardea’s mission and long-term sustainability.
As Cardea grows, we are looking for Board members who can help us think differently, build meaningful partnerships, and respond to changing policy, funding, and community needs.
What We’re Looking For
We welcome interest from people who bring one or more of the following:
- Fresh thinking and a willingness to respectfully challenge traditional approaches
- An entrepreneurial, growth-focused mindset
- Relationships that can help Cardea develop new partnerships
- Insight into evolving policy and funding environments
- Professional, community, or lived experience that reflects the organizations and communities Cardea serves
- A collaborative approach and the confidence to offer a different point of view
You do not need to check every box. We are interested in building a Board strengthened by different skills, experiences, identities, and perspectives.
Broadening the Perspectives Around the Table
Cardea welcomes people of all backgrounds and is intentionally working to broaden the racial, ethnic, LGBTQIA+, professional, and geographic perspectives represented on our Board.
We especially encourage interest from Latino/a, Asian and Pacific Islander, Native and Indigenous, and LGBTQIA+ leaders, including people from South Asian communities. We are also interested in expanding the Board’s geographic representation, particularly in California and the Sacramento region.
Our goal is a Board that more closely reflects the organizations and communities Cardea works alongside.
What Board Service Involves
Board Directors are expected to:
- Attend at least four regular Board meetings annually. Cardea’s current schedule includes virtual meetings every other month and one annual in-person meeting.
- Participate in committee and special meetings as needed.
- Prepare for meetings, contribute thoughtfully, and maintain confidentiality.
- Support Cardea’s governance, partnerships, and long-term sustainability.
Term and Compensation
Board Directors serve 24-month terms and may serve up to three consecutive terms, followed by a required one-year break.
Board service is voluntary and uncompensated. Approved Board-related expenses may be reimbursed.
Your Expertise Is the Contribution
Cardea has no personal fundraising quota or “give-or-get” requirement. Directors may support strategic partnerships and resource-development opportunities when appropriate.
The value you bring is your experience, judgment, ideas, relationships, and perspective.
